Our Southside restaurant has proudly served the San Antonio community for over 55 years, offering great food at friendly prices. Our story begins back in 1958, when Bud Jones opened Bud Jones Restaurant in what was once a Walsh’s Grocery Store at Military and Commercial. Bud opened the restaurant upon returning from a long journey working in the merchant marines as the master chef of a luxury cruise liner. Having grown up under the wing of his father, Bob Jones, the owner of the famous Bob Jones Restaurant on Roosevelt Avenue, Bud decided to try his own hand in the restaurant business.
Bud served his first plate of fish and chips in October of 1958. On the very first day of the restaurant’s grand opening, business was overwhelmingly booming, and Bud had to excuse himself from his customers to find help. He ran out the back door of the restaurant and begged a woman hanging her laundry next door to please help him to serve the crowds. The woman, Bernice Housos, would become Bud Jones Restaurant’s first employee, and she continued to work for the restaurant for the next 50 years.
